There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

Colin Powell

You have probably heard that it is not the goal, but the journey there that is important. While this remains true because many valuable lessons are learned along the way, whenever you endeavor to begin anything, you must have an idea of what the end result might be.

We usually call them goals, but they can be anything really. The point of this post however is to call out the results that you may not be aware of, the things that change in you on your way to the goals.

As a martial artist, we always have goals, whether it is the next rank or the winning the next tournament or simply doing one more pushup than before. The thing is to remember that along the way, you will be making a lot of changes. You might start to find that for each failure, you begin to learn to focus on the goal and remember why you are putting yourself through this in the first place. You may realize that things that were difficult when you first started are now smoother and easier to perform. You may notice your strength and endurance increasing as you go along and you may even find that your drive to succeed bleeds over into the rest of your life.

The point is, that while the goal is important, don’t forget that every little success on the way there still counts as a result. You are making progress and as long as you keep at it, you will achieve those goals.
