This week’s word is Objective. In the English language, this word has two meanings, but here we use it as a synonym for the word goal. In our lives, and especially in martial arts, we have many goals, things we want to work towards. The difficulty arises when other distractions take you away from your work towards that goal. When you start to feel like you are making no progress, slow down, refocus on your goals, whatever they are, and try to pare them down to something manageable. Then, come up with ways to keep yourself focused on those goals so that the distractions aren’t as much of an issue as they could be.
Objectives are a way to measure your progress in martial arts. Whether it’s the next rank or the next technique or winning the next fight. Objectives allow us to be consistent in our training because it will be towards those goals and not a lot of wasted work. It allows us to consider the time we have and make sure that what we do is not a waste of time, but a good use of it to succeed in our endeavors.
Next time you feel lost and like you are going nowhere, think of your goals. Reevaluate them and strive towards them. You will soon see progress and success is sure to follow.
