July 2019 Update

Hi everyone and welcome to July! It is my sincere hope that you are enjoying all that Summer has to offer. Training outside can be an amazing experience, but it can also be a detrimental one if not done correctly. Please make sure that cool water is accessible at all times, whether you are outside or inside training. If you are outside, consider the location. Try to be somewhere that provides some shade and is also free from distractions as well as people that might confuse what you are doing with something that it is not, especially if you are working with weapons of some kind. This is vitally important as many incidences have been caused by a misunderstanding of what is occurring. That being said, pay attention to your limits while outside. Even if the sun is not beaming directly on you, the heat alone can exhaust you faster than you are used to. If you start to feel light-headed or dizzy and can’t seem to take enough air in, you might be starting to get heat exhaustion. It’s time to stop what you are doing and cool down, with cool water and possibly a cool damp cloth to place on your forehead as well. Speaking of the sun, wearing sunscreen is also important, even if it is cloudy. The sun’s rays can still get to you and cause significant harm. Please stay safe out there.

Now, for the news. Always wanted to say that. The Shaolin Institute Classes are still going strong at our Saturday location, but we would like to see our family grow. Remember, if you’ve never tried Kung Fu before but have always been curious about it, now is the time to come and check us out. Your first class is FREE! Try us out for one session, and I am sure you will start to see the benefits right away. That brings me to our word of the month, Will.

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.”– Confucius

It is not enough to want something. Your Will is the part of you that gets things done. It is that part of you that drives you to get up every day and do what needs to be done to survive in this world. It is also the thing that you use to get what you want out of life. If you want something, you have to put your Will into it and it gets done. Even if you fall, make a mistake, whatever, your Will tells you to stand back up, do it again and do it right. Without this, humans would not have built the most amazing structures in the world, created societies that lasted generations and are still talked about thousands of years after they have passed, or have gone into the space around our planet. This month in the United States, we celebrate our Independence Day. If it weren’t for the Will of the people to throw off the shackles of a government that they considered immoral and wrong, we may have never become the country we are today. Everything we get done is by Will. While your aspirations may be as grand as those examples or as simple as making sure you get a promotion in class, place your Will behind it and you will succeed.

Train Hard,

Head Instructor Shawn Morris
