Our word this week is Application. We’ve already talked about Function and the two go hand in hand, but in this case I want to talk about the application of mastery itself. What does it mean to be a master of something if it is if no use?
True mastery is not simply knowing all the techniques and how to use them, but when and why. It is also making them a part of who you are, expressing yourself through them. The biggest thing about being a master is knowing that you still don’t know everything. That brings us to what we do with our mastery.
We share it. In my experience I have learned more from teaching than anything else. The questions and Insights a new student brings to you allow you to question your own methods and techniques. They help you to look at all you know in another way. I try to see every student as a lesson for myself, as well as for them. A way to apply this is to break down your techniques and ask yourself how you would explain it to someone else. Something to consider as you train.
