“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” – Vince Lombardi

Determination is that moment in which you decide to do something. It’s when you stop thinking about what could go wrong and go ahead and move forward with what you want to do. When we want something bad enough, our Will gives us determination. It is that feeling that gives us the attitude of success, even if we fail.

We will fall down many times. We will fail many times. Determination gets you back up again, it tells you to do it again until you get it right. In some, it could be considered stubbornness or bullheaded, but in our world, it’s that no quit attitude that moves us forward.

Martial artists know this best because in order to succeed at any new technique or form, we have to want to and we have to be determined that we will get it eventually. For those systems that test for rank, this is especially true. If you walk into your next test determined to fail, you will. If you are determined to succeed, you may still fail, but you will know it will be a lesson so that the next time, you succeed. For us, failure is not a stopping point, it is a stepping stone. Develop your Will through determination and let nothing stop you from your goals, especially not yourself. Until next time,

Train hard,
