Those Who Forget the Past…

For generations, the martial arts have taught a truth that modern culture sometimes forgets: no one walks the path alone. Every stance we learn, every principle we embody, and every ounce of discipline we develop was passed down through sacrifice, hardship, and perseverance from those who came before us.

At Morris Martial Arts LLC, we teach that respect is more than a bow at the beginning of class. Respect is remembrance. It is gratitude. It is understanding that the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunities we pursue, and the traditions we inherit were built by others who endured struggle so future generations could stand stronger.

In Kung Fu, lineage matters deeply. Students honor their instructors, instructors honor their teachers, and every generation acknowledges the wisdom handed down through centuries. This reverence is not about blind worship. It is about humility. A martial artist understands that strength without gratitude becomes arrogance. Skill without honor becomes empty.

This same principle is reflected in Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is not simply the unofficial start of summer or a long weekend. It is a sacred reminder that countless men and women gave their lives in service to something greater than themselves. Veterans and fallen service members carried burdens most people will never fully understand. Because of their sacrifice, families gather freely, businesses thrive, children grow in safety, and communities continue forward.

Martial arts culture teaches us that to forget those sacrifices is to lose part of ourselves.

In traditional Kung Fu schools, students often bow toward ancestral tablets or photos of past masters. This practice symbolizes continuity — a living connection between the present and the past. In many ways, Memorial Day serves the same purpose for a nation. We pause to remember the courage, discipline, and selflessness of those who stood before us. We acknowledge that our current comfort was purchased at a price.

True warriors, whether on the battlefield or in the training hall, understand duty. They understand perseverance through hardship. They understand that honor is proven not through words, but through actions and sacrifice.

As martial artists, we should strive to embody those same virtues:

  • Respect for those who paved the way
  • Gratitude for the freedoms we often take for granted
  • Discipline to carry forward strong values
  • Courage to serve our communities with integrity
  • Humility to recognize that we stand on the shoulders of others

The bow in martial arts is powerful because it symbolizes mutual respect. On Memorial Day, our remembrance becomes a national bow — an act of collective gratitude to those who came before us.

At Morris Martial Arts LLC, we believe martial arts are about more than punches and kicks. They are about character. They are about preserving timeless values in a changing world. And among the greatest of those values is honoring sacrifice.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the warriors who came before us. Reflect on the freedoms their sacrifices secured. Teach the next generation why respect matters. Because when we honor the past, we strengthen the future.
