Patriot Day and Kung Fu: Faithful to Family, Culture, and Nation

Every year on September 11, Americans pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the courage shown by ordinary people during one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

That day is observed as Patriot Day, a day of remembrance established by Congress in December 2001. It calls on Americans to honor those who lost their lives, display the flag at half-staff, and observe a moment of silence.

At Morris Martial Arts, we believe remembrance is more than looking backward. It is also an opportunity to examine the values we carry forward.

One of the principles we ask our students to live by is:

“I will be faithful to the ideals of family, culture and nation.”

For a Kung Fu practitioner, those words are more than a statement to recite. They are a responsibility.

What Does Patriot Day Mean to a Martial Artist?

Kung Fu is often associated with physical skill—stances, forms, kicks, punches, conditioning, and self-defense.

But traditional martial arts have always been about more than fighting.

Our training is intended to develop the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. At Morris Martial Arts, our goal is to preserve martial arts traditions while adapting them to the needs of the modern world.

That makes Patriot Day an important opportunity for reflection.

A martial artist should understand that strength comes with responsibility.

Having the ability to defend yourself does not mean looking for opportunities to fight. In fact, good martial arts training should teach the opposite: awareness, restraint, respect, discipline, and the wisdom to avoid unnecessary conflict.

Patriot Day reminds us that courage is not simply the willingness to fight.

Sometimes courage is found in serving others.

Sometimes it is found in protecting someone who needs help.

Sometimes it is simply found in standing together when circumstances are difficult.

Faithful to Family

The first part of our moral code is family.

For many martial artists, family begins at home—but it doesn’t end there.

A traditional martial arts school becomes a kind of extended family. Students train together, encourage one another, struggle together, and celebrate each other’s progress.

That relationship creates responsibility.

The advanced student has a responsibility to help the beginner. Parents have a responsibility to encourage their children. Instructors have a responsibility to guide their students. And every student has a responsibility to contribute positively to the training environment.

Patriot Day gives us another reason to remember that the strength of a nation begins with the strength of its families and communities.

We don’t become stronger alone.

We become stronger by learning how to support one another.

Faithful to Culture

Kung Fu is also a connection to culture and tradition.

Every time we practice a traditional form, learn an old technique, bow to our instructor, or show respect to our training partners, we participate in a tradition that reaches far beyond our individual experience.

This is one reason preserving martial arts matters.

Our website describes our mission as keeping the traditions of martial arts alive while adapting them to the self-defense needs of the modern world.

Tradition gives us roots.

It teaches us that we did not create everything we know. Someone taught our teachers. Their teachers taught them. Knowledge was preserved because previous generations believed it was worth passing on.

That idea of honoring those who came before us has a powerful connection to Patriot Day.

We remember because forgetting comes at a cost.

When we remember the people who sacrificed, served, protected, and helped others, we gain a better understanding of the responsibilities that come with the lives we live today.

Faithful to Nation

The final part of that phrase in our moral code is nation.

Being faithful to one’s nation does not simply mean displaying a flag or saying patriotic words.

It means understanding that citizenship carries responsibility.

It means contributing to your community.

It means treating other people with dignity.

It means protecting the freedoms and principles that allow families, communities, and individuals to flourish.

And for a martial artist, it means remembering that our skills should ultimately serve a constructive purpose.

A strong person who lacks character can become dangerous.

A strong person guided by discipline, humility, compassion, and responsibility can become a force for good.

That distinction is at the heart of martial arts.

The Martial Artist’s Responsibility

Patriot Day also reminds us of something every martial artist eventually learns:

Strength is not measured only by what you can do. It is measured by what you choose to do.

Training gives us tools.

Character determines how we use them.

A student who learns to remain calm when frustrated is developing martial arts skill.

A student who shows respect when dealing with someone who is difficult is developing martial arts skill.

A student who keeps practicing after failing is developing martial arts skill.

And a student who uses their strength to help rather than harm others is demonstrating the deeper purpose of training.

This is why Kung Fu is a lifelong practice.

The goal isn’t simply to become better at fighting.

The goal is to become a better human being.

Remember. Honor. Continue.

On Patriot Day, we remember those who were lost.

We honor the courage and sacrifice of those who responded.

And then we ask ourselves what we will do with the lives and opportunities we have been given.

For the Kung Fu practitioner, the answer begins with the same principles we practice every day:

Be faithful to family.

Be faithful to culture.

Be faithful to nation.

Train your body.

Discipline your mind.

Strengthen your character.

Help the people around you.

Respect those who came before you.

And leave something worthwhile for those who come after you.

That is one way a martial artist can honor the past—not simply by remembering it, but by carrying its lessons forward.

At Morris Martial Arts, we believe Kung Fu is more than punches, kicks, forms, and self-defense. It is a path toward balance in body, mind, and spirit.

On Patriot Day, let us pause, remember, give thanks, and recommit ourselves to living with the discipline, respect, courage, and responsibility that make our families and communities stronger.

Remember the past. Honor the present. Build the future.
