Here is something to consider. We are aware that there are some of you who are curious about martial arts or maybe even kung fu itself but might be too shy or apprehensive about what it means to dedicate yourself to such an undertaking. While I could go on about the differences in martial arts and why kung fu is good for you (no other martial arts bashing here), I will simply focus on the why of starting something new.
First, there will never be a perfect time or ‘the right time’. The longer you wait to start something, the more your mind will find reasons not to do it until eventually, it’s not even a thought any more. That path leads to regret. I have heard the stories many times. ‘I started when I was younger, then quit’ or ‘I have always wanted to do that, but I couldn’t find the time.’ Let me tell you a little secret about time and how to control it. Yes, I said control it. Time does not give you anything for free. If you want to make something happen, you have to allocate the time give you to do so. You have to make time for it. Turn it into a habit, schedule it on your calendar, whatever you have to do to pencil taking care of yourself in to your busy schedule.
What do I mean by taking care of yourself? Besides the obvious basic daily activities, such as brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc., taking up a martial art has several well-documented benefits, all of which lead back to a better, stronger and more confident version of you. Want to feel safer walking alone? Martial arts. Want to be able to walk into a room full of people and not feel anxious if someone looks at you the wrong way? Martial arts. Want to have the confidence to make significant changes in your life? You guessed it. Martial arts. While there are other paths to such things, martial arts is a way to get many life-changing benefits all in one neatly wrapped package.
So while you are reading this, you may be thinking of all those reasons not to start. I will end this with an old Chinese proverb, you may have heard of it.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”- Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
