Back to School

It’s that time of year again and kids are going back to school and schedules become hectic, for them and us adults. This is why we were considering changing to a Wednesday night programming schedule rather than Saturdays, as these are usually days for sports tournaments, weekend getaways and more. However, Wednesday nights can also be busy as well. The thing is, martial arts, like anything else worth doing, requires a commitment. The time doesn’t magically appear. Like setting aside time for working out, having a movie night, etc., making time for practice or coming to class is on our priority list and needs to be accounted for. You have to think about what is most important to you and your family and schedule your time accordingly.

Look at it this way. You have approximately 168 hours in a week to use. If you spend 56 of those sleeping as we’re supposed to, that leaves you with 112 hours with which to do whatever you like. Work and school, including home work and travel time, is usually about 45 hours a week. We’re down to 67 hours left. Now, take out the 2 hours of kung fu class and say 10 minutes per day of practice, saving one day to rest, leaves you with 64 hours to make time for family meals, movie nights, hanging out with friends and whatever else you like to do. Broken down by day, that’s about 9 hours extra each day for your own personal time.

The point of this is to look at time like a similar resource, money. The difference is, while you can make more money, you don’t get time back. However, it has been proven that the more time you invest in yourself and your well-being, mentally and physically, that statistically, you will get more time. Make time budget. See where you spend most of it and if necessary, make some changes. You will find that fitting in time for practice and coming to class is a worthwhile investment, helping you create a better you and having more time and energy to do the things you like. See you in class!
